Varifocal Progressive Lenses

Around the age of forty our eyes start to change. A natural part of the ageing process is that the lenses and muscles in our eyes start to become less flexible. This affects our ability to focus on near objects and we develop a condition called presbyopia. Don’t panic, this is perfectly normal and comes to us all.

Varifocal lenses are corrective lenses most commonly prescribed to people with presbyopia – people who need near and distance vision correction. Varifocals allow you to see clearly at all distances with just one pair of spectacles without any sharp changes or visible lines in the lens.

The picture below shows the different areas of the lens. The lenses are designed so that when looking straight ahead you automatically look through the distance portion of the lens (shown in blue). As you look down the lens you enter the intermediate zone of the lens which gives clear focus at arm’s length (shown in yellow). Moving further down the lens provides the strongest area for closer tasks like reading ( shown in pink ).

Varifocal lenses take a little time to adapt to. Once you get used to these types of lenses you will find that you can see clearly at all distances.

Varifocal lenses are available in mulitple designs from numerous manufacturers. At Perspective Opticians we will always advise you of the lens we feel is most appropriate to your prescription and your usage.

All of our varifocals come with a 30 day tolerance guarantee, meaning you can try varifocals worry free. If you cannot initially adapt to your varifocals we offer several options. These include trying a different brand of varifocal as each manufacturer’s lenses are different, changing to bifocals or simply having single vision lenses for the distances you require.

Some older varifocal designs have large distortion zones which can make them more difficult to adjust to. We always use the best lens technology available at your particular budget, this helps to reduce the size of the distortion areas, making them easier to adjust to. The latest free-form individualised varifocals provide significantly wider viewing zones, giving clearer and more comfortable vision.
