Myopia Control

Myopia is a global concern; it’s estimated that half the world’s population will be myopic by 2050.
Let’s do what we can now to help protect their vision for years to come.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia is also known as being short-sighted or near-sighted. This means that your distance vision is blurry but things that are up-close can be seen clearly. There are varying degrees of myopia that come with greater risks.

What Causes Myopia?

Myopia itself is usually caused by the eye growing too long in shape, causing light to focus in  front of the retina, rather than directly on it. Though all of the reasons for this are not yet fully understood, there are several factors that increase the likelihood of a child becoming myopic; these include both genetic and environmental factors.

A child is 3 times more at risk of being myopic if just one parent is myopic

Is Myopia Harmful?

The risks associated with high myopia include retinal detachments, glaucoma and myopic retinal degeneration later in life. The risk increases as the prescription gets worse. These conditions can lead to sight loss, sometimes irreversibly. It is important to stay up-to-date with eye tests in order to monitor the progression of myopia.

How Can Myopia Be Managed?

Here at Perspective we offer a comprehensive myopia management plan with the aim to control and slow the progression of myopia for children under 18 years old. The plan starts from just £36 per month and consists of:

  • Consultation with our optometrists, followed by eye examinations every 6 months.
  • Specialised spectacle lenses designed to help reduce the increase of myopia, by at least 50%.

We have seen very positive results for our young patients wearing MiYOSMART and Stellest lenses, since their release in early 2022.

How Do Myopia Control Spectacle Lenses Work?

The specialised myopia control spectacle lenses have been designed based on long-standing research, showing eye growth can be controlled based on how images are focused in the peripheral parts of the retina, the light sensitive layer at the back of the eye. It is not just central vision that is important to visual development in children, but peripheral vision signals as well.

When standard spectacle lenses are worn to correct myopia, central vision is made clear but peripheral light rays are focused behind the retina causing blur. This appears to trigger the eye to grow towards where the peripheral image is focused, behind the retina, leading to accelerated eye growth and increased myopia.

The principal of myopia control vision correction is to make peripheral light rays focus in front of the retina. This type of optical profile instead creates a 'slow-down' signal for eye growth, to stop the retina moving further away from the peripheral light focus which is now in front of the retina. The result is that any slowing of eye growth will similarly slow progression of myopia.

The Essilor Stellest spectacle lenses include individual tiny lenslets that focus light in front of the retina, with the remainder of the lens providing the focus power required to correct vision. The clever technology incorporated into this design causes light rays that pass through the lenslets to remain focused in front of the retina, to act as a stop signal for myopia eye growth, no matter which part of the lens a child is looking through.

Clinical studies have shown that MiYOSMART and Stellest lenses are effective at slowing progression of myopia by at least 50%.

We have been with Perspective for many years. It was 5 stars service on that first day and, has been the same since. I would give even more 😊. Since then they have been looking after our family too. Years ago, we did go to one of the many chains who have limited time. I was always tripping and falling before Perspective. In honesty, I had got to the stage where I thought the vision could not be improved. In some ways, I was lead to believe this. Thank giodbess for Perspective 😀!!! Dan and all the team are excellent and always go out of their way to help. Dan has such a nice way of building a rapport. It puts you at ease. Even more important when you need a confidence boost. I will always appreciate the way Sarah was with Dad when he was alive. It was getting difficult as dementia was progressing. Kindness given goes a long way. Over the years Karen has become our frame style guru 😃. I just leave it to her to choose a frame for me. I am never disappointed. They are always different and allowed me to think outside the box. Thank you everyone, from the heart. Always grateful

Been to many high street opticians and struggled to find a quality frame style that suites. Thankfully Dan and his team at Perspective Opticians were able to show me an array of designer frames in all shapes and styles from brands not seen elsewhere. They helped me choose the right frame (Tom Ford) for me and recommended quality varifocal lenses for sunglasses which have given me the best vision I’ve ever had out of varifocals. The attention to detail from frame selection, measurements (some serious tech with the Seiko machine) etc went above and beyond experiences elsewhere. The decor and furnishings give it a boutique feel, much more welcoming than the more clinical high street offerings. Overall, highly recommend a visit here, I’ll be going back.

Outstanding opticians - I am so glad I came across them when moving to Solihull. They are extremely knowledgeable on specialist subjects and are kind and patient with answering my very specific questions and also doing eye tests for my young children. All staff I have met here are great, in particular Sarah and Sital, who go above and beyond what is expected. I would give them more than 5 stars if I could!

My husband and I visited Perspective Opticians recently, having been recommended by a close friend. The service we received was excellent, from the expert knowledge of Dan, our optometrist, to the front of house team who guided us through frames that would suit us. It was very personal, friendly and we left feeling like we'd really been taken care of. We will definitely be returning. Thank you, Dan and the team!
