Visual Problems

Seeing beneath the surface is essential…to the health of your eyes

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is the optical term for more than one point of focus. It occurs when the surface of the cornea or crystalline lens is not spherical. Light from an object does not focus exactly on the retina but at two separate points. An astigmatic eye has curves that are steeper in one direction than the other. An example of this could be where the cornea is not spherical and shaped more like a rugby ball than football – of course this is not noticeable by just looking at someone’s eyes.

As a result, the eye is unable to focus a point or object into a sharp focused image on the retina.

Myopia

Myopia is the term used to define short sightedness. Light from a distant object forms an image before it reaches the retina. This could be because the eye is too long, or the cornea or crystalline lens is too strong.

A myopic person has clear vision when looking at objects close to them, but distant objects will appear blurred.

Myopia is easily corrected by using prescription glasses or contact lenses specifically designed to counteract the effect. A concave lens (minus powered) is placed in front of a myopic eye, moving the image back to the retina and clarifying the image.

Hyperopia

Hyperopia means long sight and is where the image of a nearby object is formed behind the retina. This could be because the eye is too short, or the cornea or crystalline lens does not refract the light enough.

A hypermetropic person may have blurred vision when looking at objects close to them, and clearer vision when looking at objects in the distance. By placing a convex (plus powered) lens in front of a hypermetropic eye, the image is moved forward and focuses correctly on the retina.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia describes the condition where the eye exhibits a progressively diminished ability to focus on near objects. It is a perfectly natural condition that eventually affects everyone over 40, but because the effects are gradual, you may not notice that anything is wrong with your eyesight initially.

However, as the condition progresses, you may find yourself struggling to read small print, your phone or books unless they are held at arm’s length. With presbyopia, there are many factors that affect the eyes ability to accommodate over varying distances; causing light (and therefore images) to be focused behind the retina. This leads to the eyesight becoming blurred. Presbyopia can be easily corrected with glasses or contact lenses with a combination of options such as, varifocals, bi-focals, separate glasses or mono vision for contact lenses only.

We have been with Perspective for many years. It was 5 stars service on that first day and, has been the same since. I would give even more 😊. Since then they have been looking after our family too. Years ago, we did go to one of the many chains who have limited time. I was always tripping and falling before Perspective. In honesty, I had got to the stage where I thought the vision could not be improved. In some ways, I was lead to believe this. Thank giodbess for Perspective 😀!!! Dan and all the team are excellent and always go out of their way to help. Dan has such a nice way of building a rapport. It puts you at ease. Even more important when you need a confidence boost. I will always appreciate the way Sarah was with Dad when he was alive. It was getting difficult as dementia was progressing. Kindness given goes a long way. Over the years Karen has become our frame style guru 😃. I just leave it to her to choose a frame for me. I am never disappointed. They are always different and allowed me to think outside the box. Thank you everyone, from the heart. Always grateful

Been to many high street opticians and struggled to find a quality frame style that suites. Thankfully Dan and his team at Perspective Opticians were able to show me an array of designer frames in all shapes and styles from brands not seen elsewhere. They helped me choose the right frame (Tom Ford) for me and recommended quality varifocal lenses for sunglasses which have given me the best vision I’ve ever had out of varifocals. The attention to detail from frame selection, measurements (some serious tech with the Seiko machine) etc went above and beyond experiences elsewhere. The decor and furnishings give it a boutique feel, much more welcoming than the more clinical high street offerings. Overall, highly recommend a visit here, I’ll be going back.

Outstanding opticians - I am so glad I came across them when moving to Solihull. They are extremely knowledgeable on specialist subjects and are kind and patient with answering my very specific questions and also doing eye tests for my young children. All staff I have met here are great, in particular Sarah and Sital, who go above and beyond what is expected. I would give them more than 5 stars if I could!

My husband and I visited Perspective Opticians recently, having been recommended by a close friend. The service we received was excellent, from the expert knowledge of Dan, our optometrist, to the front of house team who guided us through frames that would suit us. It was very personal, friendly and we left feeling like we'd really been taken care of. We will definitely be returning. Thank you, Dan and the team!
