Optician Awards –Independent Practice of the Year 2009

The Optician Awards are a national event, designed to recognise excellence within the optometry profession. Nominees for each category are assessed by an independent panel of judges from the optical industry and profession. The judging process involves practice visits, patient testimonials and reviewing extensive supporting case files.

After four successful years of growth and business Perspective Opticians were shortlisted for two categories in 2009, The Fashion Frames Practice of the Year, and one of the longest running awards, the Independent Practice of the Year.

Over 850 guests attended the Hollywood glamour themed awards night at the National Motor Cycle Museum. A red carpet arrival amid the flashing lights of the paparazzi set the tone for the evening.

Jason Manford, star of TV’s 8 out of Ten Cats and Live at The Apollo was on hand to entertain and present the awards.

“The tension before the Fashion Frames Practice Award on our table was incredible, only to be matched by the disappointment when we were only runners up. We thought this was our best chance of winning and award as we where such as young practice… When they said we were the future of independent optometry and announced Perspective as the Independent Practice of the Year we were all in total shock!”
“I was so amazed I took the whole team up to collect the award, even though it was only supposed to be one person on stage…. our achievement would not have been possible without everybody at Perspective’s hard work and passion."

Each year the titles are awarded to a different practice or individual, we aim to win again in other categories in the years to come!

The Rodenstock Prize 2013

In 2013, James ‘Jay’ Derrington completed the examinations to become a qualified Dispensing Optician. At the graduation in Canterbury in November 2013 James was awarded the Rodenstock Prize for the highest mark in Section D of the Final Qualifying Practical Examinations. Section D of the examination was Abnormal Ocular Conditions in which James achieved a mark of 100%.

“Abnormal Ocular Conditions was a very important section of our examinations as a major role of a Dispensing Optician is our patients’ health. As a Dispensing Optician, I have a duty of care to my patients that if an Optometrist is not in practice at that time, or if our patient has phoned the practice, I can identify their condition and advise the next move, whether that is to see an Optometrist of go straight to eye casualty. To get 100% in this examination was a major achievement to which I owe a big thank you to my teachers, Dan, colleagues and former colleagues who gave me excellent advice and information.”

SOLIHULL BID AWARDS

In November 2015 Perspective was shortlisted from 120 entrants for in the ‘Best Independent Business’ category at the first Solihull BID excellence awards. The BID awards were established as a way to promote and recognise the success and hard work of local businesses. The Independent Business award focused on businesses having to do it on their own in an often crowded marketplace, competing against some of the best known and easily recognisable companies in the country. Unfortunately we were pipped to the post for the main award and given a special ‘Highly Commended’ prize, speaking to one of the judges afterwards it was a very close call. This is still a tremendous achievement given the strength of the competition and the number of independent businesses in the Solihull area. Naturally however we think we deserved to win, but we invite you to be the judges of that.
